GREEK HISTORICAL OUD MADE IN NEA KOKINNIA IN 1940. COMPETELY RESTORED BY GARI HEGEDUS. HISTORY BELOW.
My Father came to Greece as a refugee from Turkey in the 1922 "Mikrasiatiki Katastrofi." As with many other refugees, my Father settled in a refugee settlement in Drapetsona, Piraeus. He had been a musician in Turkey as a young man, but had to leave his instruments behind as he, along with thousands of other Greek refugees who were suddenly displaced as the Turkish troops advanced on their towns and cities, had to leave suddenly with literally only the shirts on their backs. In Piraeus, he met a famous instrument maker from Smyrni (Tokmakoglou) who had also been displaced and had arrived in Piraeus as a refugee himself. Being a famous instrument maker in Turkey, all the professional refugee musicians went to him to order instruments to use in the refugee bands that were forming all over Piraeus, Athina, and Thessaloniki at the time.
